It does resembles veins of our Earth 
Do you know what Gaia is? Gaia is our planet Earth, as a living being, and as a goddess. There's this band I'm a big fan, Mägo de Oz [Wïzard of Oz] from Spain, and they have 2 albums: Gaia in 2003 IIRC and Gaia II: La Voz Dormida [The Sleeping Voice] in 2005, and in the song Gaia, says [translated of course, cuz they sing in spanish] "I'll have revenge and every bad thing you make to mem I will return it to you. Man was never Gaia's master/lord/owner, it's exactly the other way around." Her veins are all dry because of the pollution, war, and all bad things we do. Luckily, some people do care.\
